What To Expect
Your day trip starts with a drive from Rome by comfortable coach to Assisi, a UNESCO-listed town in the beautiful hills of Italy’s Umbria region. During the drive, learn about Assisi’s historical significance, most famously as the birthplace of Italy’s patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi.
When you arrive, visit the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s biggest pilgrimage destinations, where Catholics come to see St. Francis’ tomb. Then head to a local restaurant for a 3-course lunch of Italian favorites such as pasta al pomodoro (tomato and basil sauce) and roast chicken with potatoes.
After lunch, continue your Assisi tour at the Basilica of St. Clair (Basilica di Santa Chiara), named for St. Clair, who was a pupil of St. Francis’, followed by the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels (Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli), located at the bottom of the hill where Assisi sits. Learn about the Porziuncola here, which St. Francis restored after he received a vision of Jesus Christ.
Your day trip ends with the return drive to Rome.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Basilica di Santa Chiara
The building is characterized by the execution of the whole body with pink and white bands of Subasio stone and majestic climbing arches supporting the two sides of the church. The interior is structured like the upper Church of St. Francis with a single nave ending in a transept with a polygonal apse. Here too a gallery goes around the perimeter, however, contrary to St. Francis, at the height of the capitals of the pillars.
Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli - Porziuncola
The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels is a church, of Roman Catholic rite, located in Assisi, in the hamlet of the same name. It was built on a project by Galeazzo Alessi and with interventions by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola starting from the second half of the sixteenth century.
