Itinerary
Stop At:
Colosseum
Meeting with our guide at the Colosseum, at the agreed time, for a 3 hours itinerary to understand more about Ancient Roman history. The Colosseum is the symbol of the city and the largest Roman amphitheatre in the world, where over 50.000 spectators could quickly find their seats shaded by a huge awning. Cruel fights between gladiators and beasts took place here. You will walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali and go up to the Campidoglio (Capitoline Hill), the acropolis of Ancient Rome, today the monumental city’s mayor seat, designed by Michelangelo in 1536. In its square, lies the statue of Marcus Aurelius. Just the view of the Roman Forum from this point is worth the tour.
Descending the Cordonata (Campidoglio steps), you will walk along Via del Teatro Marcello to reach the homonymous ancient theatre dedicated to Ottavia’s son, Emperor Augustus’ sister. A few steps away, Portico d’Ottavia is what remains of the big Temple dedicated by Emperor Augustus to her sister.
Passing by numerous signs and evidence of Ancient Rome, you will reach St. Nicolas Church, that hides three temples and 3rd Century B.C. money exchange offices (from outside). This was an important European trade area with its own power. You will stop at the Forum Boarium, with a complex of well-preserved Temples. The famous Mouth of Truth big Mask is under the portico of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Following the legend, if you tell a lie while your hand is in the mouth, the face will bite it…be careful!
This tour will end in one of the most breath-taking views of the city from the Orange Gardens and a surprising keyhole; skilful photographers should be able to capture a tiny dome of St Peter in the Vatican framed by trees.
