Musei Capitolini
The second part of the tour includes a visit to the Capitoline museums, housed in the buildings designed by Michelangelo in the mid-sixteenth century on the Campidoglio hill. Many rooms are themselves masterpieces, due to the very high level of their decorations. The creation of the museum dates back to Pope Sixtus IV, who in 1471 donated to the city a collection of important antique bronzes owned by the Papacy (including the Capitoline Wolf). These works were placed in the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori and in the Piazza del Campidoglio: this makes the Capitoline Museums the oldest museum in the world, intended as a place where art can be enjoyed by everyone and not only by those who own the works.
