Overview

A visit of the 12th century Basilica of San Clemente reveals a gleaming gold mosaic above the central apse. St. Clement's transformed over centuries from a private home that was the site of a secret Christian worship in the first century to an imposing basilica. What laid beneath the Basilica was unknown until 1860, when flooding led an Irish Dominican Roman Catholic priest and archaeologist into the levels beneath the basilica floor. Excavations are ongoing. Today, you can descend up to 100 feet underground over three levels. At the first level we will find a 4th century Basilica, long forgotten after the construction of the 12th century Basilica above. Underneath, find the remains of an ancient pagan Mitraic temple. Lower still, ruins of ancient Roman homes.

Highly recommend! Very interesting history - and not so crowded so you really had a chance to stop and look closely. Also nice and cool on a hot day!

A unique underground and small group tour

Although we had been to Rome before on numerous occasions, this tour provided a totally different perspective on the city and how it was built on over and over during the centuries. You get to see firsthand how materials were recycled and repurposed. It was the perfect length of time and we all learned something new about the history of Rome. Our guide Gina was very knowledgeable and shared history, insights, and even maps throughout the tour. Great tour for a unique Rome experience, perfect for families and in a small group.

The Basilica di San Clemente is extraordinary. Normally, I prefer to read about places and visit them myself, without a guide. This is the exception. Our guide Gina led us through the basilica, literally “down” through the ages, until we ended at the first-century Mithraic temple, explaining various paintings and frescoes, and making the period (whether the 12th Century, the 4th or the 1st) come alive. Thank you, Gina! I highly recommend this tour.
