Hotels close to History
It’s hard to visit Rome without being absorbed by the history. A wander round Rome is like stepping back in time. If you want to absorb as much as possible, stay close to the historical centre. The main attractions in the historic centre would include the Colossuem, Vatican, Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, and other central “hot-spots” such as Trastevere, Campo dei Fiori and Piazza Navona. All of this is in a relatively small area in the centre generally called “The Historic Centre” or “Centro Storico”.

The area is only a few square kilometres, and there is little difference between the various locations in terms of general access to the all the sites. Anything within this few square kilometres can be described as “The centre”. This is “Renaissance” and “Baroque” Rome, and has older buildings (up to 700 years) which are generally smaller and darker than elsewhere, but are chock full of character. Most sites are walking distance from here, and so it is a very popular place – generally reflected in prices. In this area are Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, and Trastevere.

Hotels near the Vatican
Vatican City is an ecclesiastical state, seat of the Roman Catholic Church, and an enclave in Rome, situated on the west bank of the Tiber River. Vatican City is the world’s smallest fully independent nation-state. Its medieval and Renaissance walls form its boundaries except on the southeast at St. Peter’s Square (Piazza San Pietro). Of the six entrances, only three—the piazza, the Arco delle Campane (Arch of the Bells) in the facade of St. Peter’s Basilica, and the entrance to the Vatican Museums and Galleries in the north wall—are open to the public. The most imposing building is St. Peter’s Basilica, built during the 4th century and rebuilt during the 16th century. Erected over the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle, it is the second largest religious building (after Yamoussoukro Basilica) in Christendom.

No trip to Rome is complete without a visit to the Fontana di Trevi, or Trevi Fountain. Located in the Quirinale district of Rome, the Trevi Fountain is known as one of the most stunning fountains in the world. But there’s a lot more than just beauty behind this famous fountain!

Though it was one of 1,352 fountains in 4th century Rome, the Trevi Fountain has always stood out from the rest. After a prolonged closure while it was being refurbished by the fashion house, Fendi (who reportedly spent a cool $2.2 million), the fountain has just re-opened better than ever, so it’s time to book tickets and get to Rome to see it!

Hotels near Termini
There are always occasions when you want to stay close to the city’s main railway stations. Rome Termini is a main hub. From here you can travel to all parts of Italy, and to neighbouring European cities. To be honest, this is not the most attractive part of Rome, but look beyond the façade and you’ll discover that it has some terrific museums and churches, as well as several cool eateries and bars. Overlooking the bus station on Piazza dei Cinquecento, the Museo Nazionale Romano: Palazzo Massimo alle Terme is one of the best museums in Rome. It has some amazing ancient sculptures and a series of sensational Roman mosaics. If you’re into mosaics, you’ll also enjoy the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the Basilica di Santa Prassede, a little-known church hidden away in a quiet back lane. East of Termini, San Lorenzo is a student area full of bars and underground clubs. The hub of the action is Via del Pigneto, scene of a lively daily market, but you’ll also find bars and restaurants in many of the surrounding streets. Places to try include Co.So, a trendy cocktail bar, and Necci, a historic local hangout.

Hotels near Villa Borghese
We’ve already listed some of our favourite luxury Rome hotels in the section above. It’s no accident that many of the best hotels in Rome are near the Villa Borghese area. Villa Borghese is a great landscape garden, containing a number of buildings, museums, and attractions. It is the second largest public park in Rome (80 hectares or 148 acres) after that of the Villa Doria Pamphili. What makes this park so special and so different from other famous parks in the world, is that it mixes a beautiful green landscape with roman art.

The estate was created  in 1580 as a small vineyard belonging to the Borghese family. In 1605, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V and patron of Bernini, began turning this old chateau into the most extensive gardens in Rome. Over the years, the Borghese family bought surrounding lands to expand their estate.

In 1633, the Villa Borghese Pinciani was built to house the art collections of the Borghese family. It was situated next to Casino Nobile, known today as the as Galleria Borghese. This building was used as the national museum since 1903.

In 1901, the state bought the Villa Borghese and two years later (in 1903), it was opened to the public. If you think this sounds like a wonderful part of Rome to be based, you’d be correct.
