Santuario della Santissima Trinita - Della Montagna Spaccata
The Sanctuary of the Split Mountain is a suggestive place, carved out of the deep fissure of the promontory, overlooking the sea. According to the history, St. Filippo Neri and Pope Pius IX himself prayed here during the forced exile of 1849 in Gaeta. In the area of the Sanctuary there is the "Turk’s Cave" (a huge natural cavity) where it is possible to walk up through comfortable steps, until reaching the belvedere. According to local Catholic tradition, the rocks here cracked in three places at the very moment that Jesus died on the cross.
You will reach the nice town of Sperlonga one of the most beautiful Borgo in Italy. The village, perched on the sea, is surrounded by the Mediterranean colors of the coast and the blue of the sea; a maze of alleys, small squares, stairways. You will walk in the pedestrian area enjoying the silence and the peaceful rhythms of the village, among the typical white houses and the characteristic little shops.
You will visit the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga where you can admire "the Marble Odyssey", a series of sculptures depicting Ulysses’deeds and the Grotto of Tiberius where a luxurious "Cenatio" (an ancient dining room) was built surrounded by water and beautiful statues depicting the saga of the Homeric hero Ulysses.
