Itinerary
Stop At:
Basilica of San Clemente
Starting from the current church built during the 12th century, you will be taken on a trip back into history.
Learn about the history of St. Clement’s Basilica by exploring its four levels where you can see how the church was rebuilt during the centuries.
Admire the impressive mosaics, frescoes, and the wooden ceiling of the medioeval church. Discover the early medioeval wall paintings and the marble statues of the Basilica.
Go back to 2000 years to admire the ruins of an old temple dedicated to Mithra, a private Roman house and a storehouse dating back to the 1st century.
Move to Santa Maria Immacolata Concezione where you can see the Crypt of the Capuchins. Five rooms decorated with the bones of monks, more than 4000 friars were buried here. Some of them are completely intact. A palque at the entrance of one of the chapels reads: “What you are now, we once were, what we are now, you will be.”
