Start your day with an outdoor buffet breakfast, with Italian and American delicacies. Sip coffee and fresh orange juice in the tranquil setting of the Vatican, before the crowds arrive. After breakfast, your guide will escort you through the Vatican Museums complex while it is still closed to the public (a few other pre-booked tour groups will be the only others inside).
You will head through the Gallery of Maps, Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of the Candelabra and view the renowned sculpture of Lacoon and his sons; plus, a real highlight of the Vatican Museums - the beautiful Raphael Rooms.
You will then head into Michelangelo’s world-famous Sistine Chapel. Before entering, you’ll hear the stories behind the frescoes from your guide, their meaning and their significance. Michelangelo spent eight years of his life painting these wonderful frescoes – an incredible undertaking!
Next, the tour will move on to St. Peter’s Basilica which is built over the tomb of St. Peter and is one of the most important sites of the Christian world. It is the world’s largest Basilica and the sheer scale and architectural beauty will leave you in awe. It took over 120 years to complete and was contributed to by many of the most skilled and respected craftsmen and artists from the Renaissance Period. Inside there is Michelangelo’s “La Pietà”, Bernini’s famous altar and the chair of St. Peter, amongst many other spectacular treasures.
